If the ocean is calm, we are in the water. People say that there is no bad time to visit. Even if it rains, it is often a quick warm rain followed by rainbows. That being said, different areas of Maui have different weather patterns. Kahana Sunset is located on the leeward west side of the island. Without rain, there would be no rainbows. If you are visiting on a rainy day, here are some suggested rainy day activities at <a href=\"https:\/\/mauiwebcameras.com\/maui-rainy-day-activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mauiwebcameras.com<\/a>. Kahana Sunset enjoys a small intimate beach &#8212; although there is public beach access (as with all beaches in Maui), it feels very secluded. During the winter months, the occasional ocean storm can minimize the Kahana Sunset beach as sands shift in the bay. It&#8217;s amazing to watch the big waves come in from the comfort of the lounge chairs on the lawn. Be safe as you enjoy the beautiful waters of Maui. Look at the snorkel reports, ocean conditions and the weather. Of all the islands in Hawaii, the snorkeling here is the best. Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/thesnorkelstore.com\/maui-snorkeling-conditions-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.thesnorkelstore.com<\/a> for a daily Maui snorkeling report.&nbsp;Please help protect the coral reefs, wildlife and ocean. We always wear rash guards in the water and avoid using sunscreen which can damage the coral. Buy your sunscreen in Maui as only mineral sunscreens that use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are allowed. Some snorkeling areas (Honolua Bay included) prohibit spray sunscreens at the beach area. NEVER touch the coral as it is a fragile and slow-growing living organism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 50 years of enjoying Maui waters, we have never had a problem other than a nasty sunburn when a rash guard wasn&#8217;t worn. In an abundance of caution, please consider these tips from us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Always have a partner in the water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never snorkel in murky water for shark safety. If there is a shark sighting, beaches will post signs and close access. We have snorkeled around the smaller white tipped reef sharks and never had an issue but tiger sharks are another matter altogether. Shark attacks are extremely rare.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you see one of the rare endangered monk seals, keep your distance or get out of the water and realize that you are seeing something quite special. There are only 1600 monks seals in existence and they only live in Hawaii. They are not considered aggressive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Box jelly fish are rare in Maui but are more prevalent on other islands 8-10 days after a full moon (put vinegar on a sting and seek medical help if necessary).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always stay a minimum of 10 feet away from turtles, both on land and in the ocean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow any warnings about currents in the snorkel reports.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t be a &#8220;beach bowling ball&#8221; when you exit the water. Take a few minutes to watch the waves behind you and choose a safe time to leave the water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kahana Sunset beach is good for swimming with the turtles and just chilling in the water.&nbsp;There is a complimentary area of sand toys and other beach items next to the maintenance building by the Keone Nui room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many local places where you can rent snorkel gear. Look in the TV cabinet if they are not on the coffee table. There is nothing more fun than to snorkel in the tropical waters, then come back to the condo and identify the different fish! A few of our favorite places to snorkel within a 15 minute drive are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Honolua Bay. This is where the tour boats go, but you can also drive to it. Honolua Bay is my absolute favorite place to see fish. It has a rocky entrance so be careful. Do not bring anything valuable with you as car theft has been reported there (and probably everywhere else). Drive north on Honoapiilani Hwy, go down the hill until you come to a really sharp turn in the road. Park in the dirt parking area where there are outhouses. Walk through the \u201cjungle\u201d and you\u2019re there. Both sides are good for snorkeling, although we prefer the right side of the bay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kaanapali Beach. Get up early to get the free limited public parking. This is where all the expensive Lahaina hotels are, one after another. Go to the far north area and walk through the hotel(s) to Black Rock for the best snorkeling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Airport Beach. On the other side of Black Rock. Lots of public parking and easy sandy beach access. The reef is in close (about 10 feet out) &#8212; enter directly across from the parking lot. This is Cyndi&#8217;s second favorite place to go early in the morning before the winds kick up and often where we take inexperienced snorkelers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Napili Beach. Easy access to the water and lots of turtles. Parking is hit and miss so go earlier than later.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kapalua Bay. Right up the road from Kahana Sunset. Public parking is by Merriman&#8217;s restaurant but the parking lot is usually loaded and people park on the road. Go early in the morning to avoid crowds. The snorkeling and coral is amazing on the right side of the bay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>D. T. Fleming Beach has a lifeguard on duty. We haven&#8217;t snorkeled there yet but use this to start the walk on the Kapalua Trail from the parking lot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some great beaches both north and south of Lahaina. Leaving our condo and before you get to Lahaina, you\u2019ll see some parks on the right with picnic tables. Diving is usually pretty good there, although we avoid this area on the weekends when local fishermen are out casting their lines. Going south past Lahaina, you\u2019ll see some great beaches directly off the road with pretty decent snorkeling. Just go where you see cars parked. Mile Marker 14 is a great area with calm wave action. You will literally be right off the highway. Be careful not to get stuck in the sand \u2014 pick your parking spot wisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other great places to snorkel include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiisnorkelingguide.com\/ahihi-kinau\/\">La Perouse Bay<\/a> \u2014 a bit of a drive to get there, but you drive through lava beds to get to the bay. Way cool! Sometimes you see spinner dolphins in the morning. The Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve is where you snorkel and pay a parking fee. Be careful of the lava rocks as you enter the water. The coral is beautiful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Molokini Crater \u2014 a boat ride to one of the most spectacular places to snorkel with crystal clear water. Try to go on a day that\u2019s not windy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/hawaii\/maui\/walking\">alltrails.com<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/mauiguidebook.com\/category\/hikes\/\">mauiguidebook.com<\/a> for a map of some popular hikes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to take a short walk right from the condo, go to the main entrance and turn right (south) on Lower Honoapiilani Rd. You&#8217;ll stroll by many beautiful and very expensive mansions. Turn right on Hui Rd and go to the end of the cul-de-sac where you see a small public access sign. Walk through the hedge and you&#8217;ll get to the rocky point that can be seen from our lanai. This is a popular fishing spot and featured in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nV18Th3jV_0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube video<\/a> by Jennifer Lei \u2014 you can see Kahana Sunset in the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you continue south on Lower Honoapiilani Rd, you&#8217;ll come to a secluded little beach that even has a swing hanging from a tree. We have never run out of places to dine and try a new restaurant with every visit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LOCAL PLACES TO EAT<\/strong> (There are too many to list them all)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are several good restaurants close by at the <a href=\"https:\/\/napiliplaza.com\">Napili Plaza<\/a> including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joeyskitchenhimaui.com\" title=\"Joey's Kitchen\">Joey&#8217;s Kitchen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mamasribsandrotisserie.com\" title=\"\">Mama&#8217;s Ribs and Rotisserie<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amigoslahaina.com\" title=\"\">Amigo&#8217;s Lahaina<\/a>. All have take-out and dine-in options. Dang Dang Noodle is opening April 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Right up the road is <a href=\"https:\/\/kitchen5315maui.com\">Kitchen 5315<\/a> with happy hour deals and good Mai Tais.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&#8217;re thinking of a special evening out, try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.napilikai.com\/dining\/\" title=\"\">Sea House<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merrimanshawaii.com\/location\/maui\/\" title=\"\">Merriman&#8217;s<\/a> right up the road. You&#8217;ll want to get a reservation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.captainjacksmaui.com\" title=\"\">Captain Jack&#8217;s<\/a> is now located just a few miles south at the Sands of Kahana. They don&#8217;t take reservations. Definitely one of our local favorites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hulagrillkaanapali.com\/menus\/\" title=\"\">Hula Grill<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leilanis.com\" title=\"\">Leilani&#8217;s<\/a> at Kaanapali are always great places to eat but a more on the touristy expensive end. If it&#8217;s available, Hula Grill has a reasonable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hulagrillkaanapali.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/24_TS_HGK_Menu_ChefsTasting_DEC06_web.pdf\" title=\"\">2-course tasting<\/a> dinner from 4:30-5:15. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukesmaui.com\" title=\"\">Dukes<\/a> is also owned by the same company, which means the menu features the famous Original Hula Pie!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.starnoodle.com\" title=\"\">Star Noodle<\/a> features shared plates. Recommended are the garlic noodles and tempura shrimp.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next door to Star Noodle is <a href=\"https:\/\/alohamixedplate.com\" title=\"\">Aloha Mixed Plate<\/a> where locals go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.happyfishmaui.com\" title=\"\">Happy Fish<\/a> is a sports bar\/restaurant that features an incredible mai tai and great fish tacos.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For Italian food, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepourhousekapalua.com\" title=\"\">The Pour House<\/a> at Kapalua \u2014 the burrata cheese is authentic and house salad is incredible. At the golf course, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theplantationhouse.com\" title=\"\">The Plantation House<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For an easy take-out night, we get fish tacos at the <a href=\"https:\/\/fishmarketmaui.com\">Fish Market<\/a> or order pizza at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pizzaparadiso.com\">Pizza Paradiso Mediterranean Grill<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/dolliespizzakahana.com\" title=\"\">Dollie\u2019s Pub and Cafe<\/a> has great pizza, also.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kids always love a breakfast down the road at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slappycakesmaui.com\">Slappy Cakes<\/a> where you make pancakes at your table.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ever been in line for an hour to buy a cinnamon roll? Cyndi does it every trip &#8212; they are that good. <a href=\"https:\/\/papisohana.com\" title=\"\">Papi&#8217;s Ohana<\/a> truly makes the world&#8217;s best cinnamon rolls. Get in line around 7am when they open, make some new friends in line, and you will not be disappointed. They close when they sell out. Always check their Facebook page in case they are not open as it&#8217;s a small family run business.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are good food trucks down the road across from Times Market.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OTHER PLACES TO EAT IN MAUI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/tinroofmaui.toast.site\" title=\"\">Tin Roof<\/a> is a Hawaiian take-out only place right near the airport. It&#8217;s run by Sheldon Simeon. Order your food online because there is always a line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We agree with everyone that <a href=\"https:\/\/mamasfishhouse.com\">Mamas Fish House<\/a> is incredible but very pricey.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Want an incredible hamburger and milkshake? Go to Kihei where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coolcatcafe.com\" title=\"\">Cool Cat Cafe<\/a> has reopened. The Don Ho burger is Cyndi&#8217;s favorite. They recently opened a take-out stand in Kaanapali.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/stillwellsbakery.com\" title=\"\">Stillwells Bakery &amp; Cafe<\/a> is a local &#8220;have to know&#8221; in Wailuku.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cafeoleirestaurants.com\">Cafe o Lei at the Millhouse<\/a> is one of our favorite places to visit in the interior of the island as the restaurant is top quality and there is a plantation tour and zip lining for activities. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leodas.com\" title=\"\">Leoda&#8217;s<\/a> is on the way to the condo in Olowalu with great sandwiches and little pies that are worth the stop. Think banana cream, coconut cream, chocolate Mac, and lime.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&#8217;re in Kihei, try <a href=\"https:\/\/kiheicaffe.com\" title=\"\">Kihei Caffe<\/a> for a Loco Moco breakfast. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We&#8217;ve tried almost every luau and enjoyed them all. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southmauigardens.com\" title=\"\">South Maui Gardens<\/a> in Kihei even offers a discounted hula show (only) where you visit the food trucks for your food. IMO this is the best food truck area.
